Overview

Dou Dizhu, or Fight the Landlord, is a three-player Chinese climbing card game. One landlord plays against a two-player farmer team, and the first side to empty a hand wins.

A standard game uses 54 cards including two jokers. Bidding selects the landlord, who takes the three reserved cards and starts with 20 cards; each farmer holds 17.

Players must follow the current combination with the same type and number of cards at a higher rank, or pass. Bombs and the two-joker rocket are exceptions, but exact bidding and scoring options vary between implementations. The old 2013 date is not backed by a traceable release record, so it is no longer displayed.

How to Play

Bid only after checking high cards, jokers, twos and useful combinations. The winning bidder becomes the landlord and receives the three reserved cards.

When leading a trick, choose a legal single, pair, triple or sequence-based combination. When following, play a higher combination of the same structure, use a bomb or rocket when allowed, or pass.

The landlord wins by emptying the 20-card hand first. The farmers share a side, so a farmer may pass to preserve a partner’s lead instead of beating it automatically.
